I trained in stone carving with the sculptor Meic Watts in North Wales during the 1990s. I was privileged to learn in the beautiful environment of Snowdonia; our studio was nestled in the woods with the mountains and sea as a working backdrop. This relationship with nature has always been very important to me and it influences my work greatly. Nature is where I feel most at peace; nature is my temple.
Cultivating sacred space is my inspiration – be it within nature, art, or our own bodies – using anything that resonates with me and aids connection to the divine, to nature, to beauty…
Each piece of work is unique. A sense of an image will come to me, and will not leave until I have carved it. I use whichever stone calls me; carving shrine pieces is a moving meditation – conscious of the thing that’s coming into creation – thinking of the stone as ‘holding a space’.
My carvings can be used to aid spiritual practice; as contemplation tools – honouring and reflecting the divine temple within us: our sacred heart space.
